June 2011
Dear Parents,
This year has been a wonderful and memorable year and I hope the students feel the same as well. I have watched every child grow so much in many areas that it has brought me such joy and satisfaction. All the students have an exciting and bright future ahead of them that with guidance, encouragement and support our children can achieve their dreams and ambitions. Parents, thank you for your support and involvement throughout the year! It has been such a pleasure and privilege to teach your children, our future generation. All the best, health and happiness to the Students and their Families in the upcoming year! Enjoy the Summer!
Please find attached June’s Calendar with an outline view of what will be covered this month. Please reinforce at home, as this will build on your child’s confidence and expand on their knowledge. Also, please find attached a calendar of daily activities for every day of that month. The activities stretch across the curriculum and emphasize the application and practice of many life skills. You may decide to do all of the suggested activities or some, depending on your interest and the time available. Parents, please be advised, you can also view this month’s newsletter on the Qatar Canadian School website: http://qatarcanadianschool.pbwiki.com.

Kindergarten Celebration:
Our Kindergarten Celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, June 22nd. The celebration will take place in the small auditorium at CAN-Q Building 1 (1.1.04) from 11:00 – 12:30 pm with a small reception to follow. A Class Parent Volunteer will contact you to let you know what you may bring for this special event. Thank you for your support.
Extra Practice During The Summer Holidays:
Parents, it is strongly encouraged to practice with your child some of the concepts and objectives that we covered throughout the year.
* Identifying all letters and their sounds
* Continue to practice rhyming words with your child (even Dr. Seuss type words – made-up words can be that much more fun!) This will reinforce the sounds your child is hearing, learning and reading. Help your child create words with the same endings: ___at; ___ot; ___et, etc.
* Identifying and writing numbers from 1-30, ensuring they are starting at the top
* Have your child write 3-letter words (You say, please write the word “log”. You may assist them by sounding out the word with them. Ensure your child read the words back to you.
* Encourage your child to write simple sentences using invented spelling (Ex. Ystrda I wnt to the dsrt. = Yesterday I went to the desert.) I am really encouraging the students to sound out the word and listen to the letter-sounds. Please do not expect your child to write the word perfectly; encourage your child to write down the letter-sounds they hear in the word.
Please emphasize to space between words while printing a sentence.
* Sequencing – putting events or thoughts in sequential order
* Adding and subtracting up to 5
* Dolch Word List (I will put a copy of the word list in Students’ Year End Progress Report Card envelope)
Sincerely,
Ms. Sara

Dear Parents,
Last month, as well as this month, we have been focusing on sequencing, specifically putting events in sequential order. Please reinforce this concept at home as sequencing is one of many skills that contributes to students' ability to comprehend what they read. Sequencing refers to the components of a story, such as the beginning, middle, and end, and also to the ability to retell the events in the order in which they occurred. Sequencing is all around us…number sequence, days of the week, months of the year, the letter order in how we write our name, following a recipe…these are just to name a few examples.
Please find attached May’s Calendar with an outline view of what will be covered this month. Please reinforce at home, as this will build on your child’s confidence and expand on their knowledge. Also, please find attached a calendar of daily activities for every day of that month. The activities stretch across the curriculum and emphasize the application and practice of many life skills. March 2011
Dear Parents,
This month we will be focusing on rhyming words. Please reinforce this concept at home as rhyming words set a solid base for reading comprehension. Rhyming is a basic component of phonics and a very important pre-reading skill. Teaching your child to find rhyming words or creating a list of rhyming words will help your child recognize phonetic sounds. This prepares them for spelling and decoding words while reading.
Please find attached March’s Calendar with an outline view of what will be covered this month. Please reinforce at home, as this will build on your child’s confidence and expand on their knowledge. Also, please find attached a calendar of daily activities for every day of that month. The activities stretch across the curriculum and emphasize the application and practice of many life skills.
